Kahvi #181a-181f [randomajestiq - artkillah]

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

artkillah_lrg.jpg“Its been a while since we’ve heard anything from the Belarussian artist Randomajestiq but he’s crept in upon us once again with a new ep. Six tracks of the usual classy RM styling and production, dark and moody (artkillah) to more upbeat tempos and catchy melody (magic carpet). A whole range of different styles are covered here - something for everybody.”

  1. artkillah “dark and electronic. ambient progressive stance building the mood and expectation for the rest of the ep. excellent combination of sounds and feelings in an atmospheric masterpiece.”
  2. wet dub water (feat. kirill trepakov) “following on from the previous track, more of a beat driven offering but still with that atmospheric varient. a bit of ambience, a bit of dub. nice.”
  3. wrong window (feat. kirill trepakov) “diversifying into the lounge arena now, the dub vibe continues and takes you onto new heights. interesting collage of different genres merge.”
  4. lulu is the goat “strangest title for a track yet, influences of idm emerge with an otherwise upbeat styled track. beats aplenty and a touch of nostalgia.”
  5. magic carpet “a completely different pace for track five, could very well be the soundtrack for an epilogue of a film. easy listening and kind on the ears…”
  6. microphoby “the final track is perhaps my favorite from the ep, nice touches and flow complement a nice electronica track - off beat rhythms and pleasant air throughout. a nice track to end with.”

JTRNET #008 [mikey murka - sensi addict \ arcade addict]

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

JTR-NET08SensiAddict_med.jpg“Unity-legend Mikey Murka on a classic old-school digital smasher - a true hymn on the good sensimilla! Apart from Mikey’s incredible vocal niceness this one includes rocking drummachine action, original spliff lighting sounds, smoked out surprises from beginning to end and loads of good vibes - simply a great and fun-packed document of the unforgettable times we had back in April when Mikey and Kris Kemist from Realityshock were over in Germany for some days full of Reggae music from dusk till dawn. In case summer hasn’t caught up on you yet this track will supply just the right spark to light it up. More fine tunes by Mikey in the tube so check back soon for that!

JTR-NET08ArcadeAddict_med.jpgThe same riddim again on B - but this time fully into 8bit-arcade-mode for the coin-operated MP3 player of your choice, you might want to wiggle the beat along with an old joystick here! The tune makes funky use of the original Donkey Kong arcade machine recordings from THIS awesome project: back in 1982 two kids grabbed a stereo cassette recorder and started to tape all the beautiful crunchy noises those brilliant arcade machines possibly can create. As well as the atmosphere around them - and the idea itself! Altogether fourteen (!) cassettes, available for free download at coinopvideogames.com, highly recommended. Not only an unvaluable time document but also an important cultural heritage preserved! Thanks Dan!”

PLX #008 [VA - jackstrap]

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

plx008_large.gif“First tune from Paris suburbs-based Pappas, Sugar is a surprising track where a schyzo young boy would be singing on a kind of post-acid house minimal rhythm. Then comes famous Hrdvsion a.k.a. Nathan Jonson, known for his works on Traum, Wagon Repair, Itiswhatitis and Plak Records. This multi-faced guy from Canada gave us here a true killer track, Beside. Just american minimal techno at its best! The trip goes on with Examen by V.Rotz (from Madrid, released on Flumo, Subtropical, and Plex). Hypnotizing basic bassline, tight and arid beat, dark mood, you’ll like this one for sure. Recent sensation from the highly recommandable Mobilee label, GummiHz (from England) has already released some stuff on After-Dinner and Leftnet before. Feedback is an astonishing track with a rare inspiration and production level. If you’re seriously into minimal, you have to keep an eye on this man. Already featured in plx002, Human Koala (France) is back with Big Heat. An epic advanced tune with rockin’beat and unexpected textures, with a strong sense of direction, as always with him. The release ends with the talented Ambitronic (from Germany, released on Idealtechno.de) with a more meditative track. Christa shows us a more soulful shade of minimal, where deep elements talk directly to our feets and heart.”

EMP #015 [faun - faun]

Monday, May 29th, 2006

faun_faun_cover.jpg“Lost in the forest in the chill of fall. Breath freezing and redorangeyellow sun streaming through the barren trees. Less C.S. Lewis than the Brothers Grimm, there are mysteries to unravel, but danger lurks. Somewhere the organs of Herschell Gordon Lewis wheeze and broken machines clank out rhythmic progressions. Find comfort in discomfort, find peace in discontent. And with the dangers, perhaps its okay - walk forward - misplaced in the swirling orchestrations - Faun makes the music of childhood trepidation and fantasy - the music of secrets kept and adventures beholden. Faun is a collaborative musical group from St. Paul, Minnesota utilizing electronic instruments as well as banjos, harps, guitars, drums, cellos, and violins.”

EMP #014 [planivaar - the orange balloon]

Monday, May 29th, 2006

planivaar_tob_cover.jpg“Planivaar is the name used by the artist Mark Lippett when making music. He writes, performs and records everything himself but has also collaborated with other musicians on occasion. Planivaar began as a project in 2005 when Mark sampled old sound recordings from cassettes he had made of his family in the 80s and 90s. These quickly became pieces of music in their own right and the whole thing continued from there.

All music is created at home using guitars, keyboards and samples. Improvisation and random elements blend with dark textures and surreal humour. Sound recordings are collected from various sources and are then used at home to form the starting point for new music. Recent recordings have included samples of Marks baby son Adam.”
