Tube #078 [quest.room.project - room number - fiducial banality]

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

“A gentle flute motive introduces us to the world of Quest.Room.Project from Russia, and one might at first expect a relaxed listening experience. But by the time more voices chime in, it becomes obvious that these spotlights are going to be swallowed by shadows of tragic compassion. ‘Room Number: Fiducial Banality’ is organised in 4 parts (one could as well define them as movements, because there are some key themes occuring throughout the entire release) and each of them features a room with distinct acoustic characteristics:

‘The reason for surfacing’ appears like a shadow of a doubt that gradually turns into overwhelming certainty. Almost inaudible at the beginning, ‘Assemblage’ soon escalates to several emotional outbursts, before exhaustion will take its tribute in ‘Possesion’ and create a haunted, threatening atmosphere. As reminiscence of the beginning, ‘Combined Exercises’ begins with a flute solo and continues to pick up previous motives to escalate them to a wall of sound. Finally the dissonances wither away and make room for the last remnants of the ever occuring flute theme. A cycle has been completed and we are at the beginning again…

Bogdan Dullsky, the creative head behind the Quest.Room.Project, describes his intentions on the project’s website as ‘a search of space for the life leaving for borders of habitual linearity.’ But ‘Room Number: Fiducial Banality’ doesn’t attempt to descibe a solution to break free: It’s left up to the listeners themselves to recognise their personal ever returning patterns of life and change them by their own strategy. Or - as Bogdan concludes - as an attempt to live by some own rules on which borders it is possible to breathe freely”

ZYM #015 [V.A. - sky diary edits]

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

“Everything started when Sky Diaries, the original EP by young fellow Fred Baty a.k.a. Crepusculum, was released at 12rec. in December 2006. It was a five song EP comprised solely of incredible acoustic music, composed with a guitar and some decent electronic enhancements.

His music left me completely stunned and I immediately thought that the pureness of Freds guitar-play would be a fantastic inspiration in the hands of electronic musicians. Many artists took part in the project, adding their personal touch to every single Crepusculum track. These include Tupolev bassist and sound-artist Alexandr Vatagin, Darren McClure, Engine7, Emil Klotzsch & Raimund Sudermann, Bluermutt, Letna, Alexandre Navarro, Ibakusha, The Love Songs, Heezen, Koutaro Fukui, GoGooo and the Netaudio legend Marsen Jules who contributed different remixes for both the album and the EP.

NTT #043 [bogdan dullsky (QRP) - room number]

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

“Bogdan Dullsky (QRP) explores with ‘Room Number’ in great depth the borders of abstraction and absurdity. He renders a world consisting of the strangest harmonics, dancing around a variety of instruments (such as flute and bass guitar) which he plays very proficiently. Skillfully designed sounds are excessively displayed and the sheer number of them alone will never leave you bored. Count in the extraordinary artwork from Russian visual artist ‘Barandash’ and you know you’re heading towards a unique listening experience. “

NSI #009 [verian thomas - miniatures]

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

“Miniatures is both a concept and a recording format for this album. The album is the attempt to capture those moments of childhood existing only in memory which, when recalled, cause a slight tightening of the chest at the realisation of things lost, and to capture the beauty of those moments in sound. These small moments, pristine in their imperfection, give rise to a reverie this album seeks, in a small way, to capture.

These tracks were recorded very quickly, with dead notes and interference left in for the most part. Each piece is by design a miniature in the way of childhood–with the good and the imperfect all part of the memory.

Each first successful take was kept and used, regardless of whether the central heating boiler or the washing machine decided to take the exact wrong moment to start up and cause clicks to the audio recording. This working process involved the use of only one instrument, in this case an old Fender Telecaster that has been damaged over the years. Some parts have been replaced, others repaired so that the way it plays appeals. The joy of creation lies in part, in the idea of the restriction. No other instrument was used.

Miniatures seeks to open again the doorway into the pristine imperfection of childish things. We hope you enjoy this reverie.”

KPU #100 [the over greenland - the lost levels EP]

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

“This amazing EP is from Ed Powley’s new project, The Over Greenland. Ed has been releasing music under his own name, and the ever-popular Colophon moniker for years now on a great many other net.labels. His first Kikapu release is entitled The Lost Levels EP which contains five tracks of guitar-driven beauty. At times uplifting and bombastic, at others minimal and relaxing, this is one incredibly special album, and is definitely worthy of being our 100th release.”
