foton #006 [Object - Remote review]

Posted in Breakbeat, Experimental by sergi

foton006_tourmidi1.jpg“First in a series of three Object EP’s released in digital format. Peter Van Hoesen’s experimental alter ego cranks out four tracks of high-res machine blues. Whether it’s mutated breakbeats striving to release themselves from a layer of insistent soundscapes (’Gordon takes a break’) or semi-acoustic sounds arranged in a deceivingly minimalist manner (’Folk Four’), in every song the listener is confronted with a skewed logic of composition. If there is a strategy to the EP, it’s one of unexpected twists and turns. ‘Renewed Strength’ sounds like Autechre on speed on a rainy day whereas ‘Kmt-y Statement’s’ fragmented techno groove explores various repetitive possiblities. Both present their beauty in the oscillation between linear and cut-up - a musical language taking the listener into a rich and varied sonic space.

The visuals for the Remote Review EP are based on pictures of Brussels’ Zuidertoren/Tour du Midi/South Tower.”

PHOKE #036 [noise-beyond-silence - pe EP]

Posted in Breakbeat by twilight electric

phoke36-_-Artwork-400x.jpg“Twenty-six releases after his Phonocake debut with the catalog number 10, noise beyond silence releases another five tracks of his on the label. This EP is clearly more heterogeneous than than its precursor. Following an interesting pseudo-studio-recording, the track starts out with a Digital Hardcore breakbeat. The relentless beat decreases in the course of the track, however, along with the ‘windchill tempo’, and more melodious elements get the upper hand. This transition is continued in the tracks to come. Noise beyond silence’s sound is dominated by melodious elements, spaced-out patterns and a diversified arrangement. At the end of the EP, the beat reigns once again, incidentally very likely to get heads to nod along in rapture.”

LCD #076 [line noise & algo rythem - collab project 2006]

Posted in Breakbeat, Industrial by twilight electric

ln_algo_collab_2006.jpg“The two tracks in this release represent a collaborative project by Line Noise and Algo Rythem, and they are titled  ‘Deadwine Marquekon’ and ‘Aqua Elevation’. The prevalent feel across Deadwine Marquekon is of an ear-glitching guitar introduction, which then moves into a breakbeat industrial-like feel across the rest of the track.

In Aqua Elevation the style across the track dwells in a breakbeat-oriented fashion for most of the track, and is then coated with a few effects scattered throghout. Both of these tracks are similar in that they dwell mostly in the dark upbeat realm, and evoke rhythmic head nodding motions.”
