“Definitely one of the classiest Monotonik releases in a while, we’re happy to slip sideways from our normal Scandinavian/European-influenced idm sound into a more ambient, sonorous, consciousness-expanded universe, thanks to Santa Cruz, California duo Wavespan, aka Phil Garrison and Alex Lumb, and their great self-titled debut LP.
Garrison started producing electronic music in 1998, and he founded Complex Logic Recordings, a small record label, in 2001. His production credits include Organic Resonance Projects Lucid EP and several remixes as ind01e; in 2005, he designed patches for H.G. Fortunes (VSTi) STS-21 Transition Synthesizer. Alex Lumb has been drumming for over 20 years, in addition to producing electronic music under various names. Most interestingly as a touchpoint, perhaps, this LP has been mastered by noted ambient musician Robert Rich, helping add to the carefully positioned ethereal drift.
Over the entire 49-minute LP, there are a plethora of high points, but many may be initially fascinated by a rare Monotonik-released dub track up front, in the form of the sparse Concentration Dub, before the epic 11-minute long On The Nature Of Consciousness takes us away with almost Orb-like spoken word samples and some beautifully placed ambience. Other highlights include the mild paranoia of the JFK assassination-sampling Single Bullet Theory, the straight-ahead groove of Origin Of Species, and the marvellously placed groove of Momentary Bliss.
Overall, this is a startlingly professional album which, honestly, almost feels too good for Monotonik, but we’re delighted to release it nonetheless. If you like it, you can visit Wavespans page on the Complex Logic site and order a copy of the CD, or simply donate funds of your choice via PayPal to compensate for the more than pleasant listening experience. Hurrah.”

“Ben Businovski makes his debut appearance on netlabel Thinner with a smooth, sensual techno release showcasing his own unique fusion of Detroit Techno and dub-inspired sounds. Influenced by the music of the Transmat (Detroit) and Basic Channel (Germany) labels, Ben modestly and succinctly characterizes the album as ‘just music to make people feel calm and relaxed’.
An important counterpart to the musical focus of the album is the theme of an ‘Asian megalopolis’ as alluded to in the title and images. According to Ben, the album tells a story - ’something of a futuristic, cyber-punk, film-noir anime film.’ The tracks were written prior to his move to South Korea (where he presently resides) while at student at the University in Australia. Time spent watching Hong Kong action movies and Japanese animation inspired the quixotic idea of an Asian megalopolis. These tracks were composed while lost in a ‘Simulacraic Wonderland’, and there’s a bit of naive romanticism evident here induced by watching these movies and animations as their images created a vague, idealized semblance of living the Asian experience.
The first five tracks establish the musical theme for the album as the strong techno and dub influences make their presence known via an abundance of steady kick drum beats, synthesized sounds, minor-scale chords, punctuated stabs, mellow pads, accentuated with just the right touch of echo and delay. Especially notable is the poignant ‘Ceiling Fan’ whose evocatively melancholic tone is carried over into ‘Communication Bridge’, ‘Deception’, and ‘Dissolving’.
‘Lurking’ continues the techno/dub theme complemented by a memorable, rolling bass line. The mostly dub-flavored ‘Negating’ drops the steady kick drum in favor of some catchy rhythms and beats followed by ‘Once’ and ‘Purge All Levels’ which bring back the solid techno beats. The dubby and highly rhythmic ‘Song for a Cybernetic Amazon’ continues the album’s theme complemented by some deep bass, soft synths , and soothing piano lines.
‘Simulacraic Wonderland’ brings the album to a bucolic ending by diverging from the tech/dub theme in favor of some relaxing sounds featuring an orchestral-like atmosphere with haunting synthesized strings and a beautiful piano melody.
In retrospect, after having moved to Korea and visiting Japan several times, it became clear that the simulacra of the images on the television screen bore little resemblance to reality and to quote Ben: ‘Familiarization demystifies everything, it sobers you up and in a sad way destroys the deluded romantic concepts one can develop. Listening to it brings me back a few years to when things were not so familiar, not quite so old.’”

“amsterdams ronin, known from various releases on djax up and kazumi, imaginarily joins the kings of the skies on their way. his ‘flight of birds’ is a routemap to detroit rooted techno and some of its facets.
starting on a ‘zondag’ with a pushing approach towards dubtechno, climbing ‘this way up’ on the groovey tip, heading over the minimal and harsh landscapes of ‘ferox’. you definitely haven’t seen ‘all there is’ until you meet ‘umeks friend’, a 100% stomping monotonist.
‘what we don’t know’ ‘iona’ could teach about the deep, ‘tough one’. while the weather is getting cloudy, ‘tunnelvision’ has the drive for finding a place to ‘walk this way’, sterac style. it is uncertain ‘what’s happening’ inside a birds mind when it finally reaches its destination after a long and exhausting journey to that warm and beautfiul place. one thing for sure, ‘the flight of birds’ never stops. it’s ‘zondag’ again…”

“unfoundsound presents a six-track masterpiece courtesy of brooklyn’s david last — featuring three original numbers, plus three remixes by so inagawa (of the suffragettes), ditch and suz. on the whatwhat? ep, david last demonstrates his diverse music-making dexterity and crystal-clean production skills. the ep commences with ‘animal hybrids’ — a quirky, snippy dancefloor killer fueled by snarling found sounds and snappy percussion that all minimal techno djs can appreciate. then on ‘where it falls’, david last slows the bpm down to a chugging crawl — yielding a groovy, slow-paced dub tune meticulously doused with blips, bleeps and heady reverbs (somewhat reminiscent of monolake). this is followed by ’sporty ankles’ — a minimal masterwork that moves gently with broken beats, pretty vocal stabs, snippy percussion, drenching reverbs and a dubby undertone. then so inagawa reworks ‘where it falls’ into a deep, sample-heavy minimal ass-shaker soaked with goofy found sounds and reverb-drenched timbres. then ditch offers an upbeat remix of ’sporty ankles’ — a driving crowd-pleaser with a hard-hitting beat, gritty melodies and funny sound-sculpting. and last but not least, suz offers another version of ‘where it falls’ — a sexy and heady minimal house ditty doused with chopped up vocal snippets, a rumbling bassline, grainy textures and shuffly percussion. oh yeah! another whoppin’ ep!”

“Some years ago (early 90’s?) a certain track was released, as part of the Artificial Intelligence compilation from Warp. On that CD a track that defined electronic music for years to come, encouraging many to begin creating music (me included!) That track was ‘Release to the System’ and the artist? Mark Franklin. We have had exclusive permission from Mark to feature a track from his new EP, The Long Good Saturday, which is available for digital download at Beatport. Dub comes to Kahvi? well, in a way but this is something special.”
- beyond “solid and reliable beats. perhaps a hint of reggae there but still with elements of that ground breaking track held within. Not quite commercial but not quite idm underground either. A worthwhile addition to the collective? A piece of history ;)”

“Collaboration has always been an important factor here at One - whether it’s through music, technology or artwork. In this spirit the return of Plosive brings us a showcase of covers, mixes and overhauls of many favorite releases from the past couple of years - including reworkings of Bad Loop, Jack Haberfield, Iua, Emil Klotzsch, Paranerd, Partikel and Recue.
With much of the source material in hand, they have been made his own through complete reinterpretation - lending to their individuality and personal touch in mood and style. Too often these days original works are masqueraded and passed off as mixes - here the art of the remix is key and in usual Plosive form the sounds are heavily rhythmic and melodic - focused through an alchemy of Dub, IDM, Techno and more.”

“Minimal, deep and with space for harmonies – a little bit like the valle verzasca – that’s the 6th release of dreiton.net. The ep was produced by chris air, producer and dj from basel.
In the last few years chris released some ep’s, for example by ‘neuronal networks’ or ‘mo records’. In juni/july 2006 his ep gluecksscherben will be release by the berliner label ‘eintakt’ [www.eintakt.de]
Additionally to his action as dj and producer, chris is a member of the ‘glücksscherben’-collective, which organizes party-events around basel [www.gluecksscherben.ch]“
