Posted in Improvisation, Jazz by bleepwatcher

“Heddy Boubaker’s new project, a new alliance of talented improvisers, jazz, textures, texts, madness, pulsations which intersect, a perpetual exploration between memories and futures. And a recording of remarkable quality. “

TLHOTRA #006 [hjorten - omringad av mörker]

Posted in Improvisation, Noise by bleepwatcher

“‘Omringad av mörker’ changes between playfulness and aggression. This is a noise work, a duality between pain and joy, and it cuts like a light through darkness and questions established conceptions. Listening to Hjorten is as listening to a timeless force of willpower that never gives up. It is up to you if you want to raise the volume or cover your ears.

The music draws elements from improvisations of different treated sound sources. The result to be heard is sharp, distorted and effective. Also in the mix are more soothing and reduced noises and even some temporary rhythmic and pulsating divisions.

Hjorten comes from Uppsala, Sweden, and belongs to a new generation of noise musicians. Previously he has release cd-r records under different aliases, available from his website.”

Insub #014 [tlön5 # diatribes + johann bourquenez + christophe berthet - connivence]

Posted in Improvisation, Jazz by bleepwatcher

“This album is the story of a friendship between musicians, and between netlabel activists. So after few meetings, collaborations, concerts together it was logic to make this split release, with the piano/sax duo tlön5, and the the diatribes trio extended to 5tet. Recorded in underground places in Paris and Geneva, the music, more than ever, enjoys its freedom and conquers the spaces till implosion.”

FE #005 [miwa momo hojo & yuichi nagao - kiechimae]

Posted in Abstract, Improvisation, Noise by bleepwatcher

“Meet the voice & performance artist Miwa Momo Hojo and her colleague, the media & sound artist Yuichi Nagao from Tokyo, Japan. The combination of their works is a tidal wave of dense, digital recordings, loaded with compact melodic structures, shifting voice patterns & fuzzy electronic noise. Some of these songs are meandering from improvised acoustic basics to richly layered compositions, some have an almost romantic quality, taking the listener from from gasping emptiness to scratchy indeterminacy. The music by Miwa Momo Hojo & Yuichi Nagao is a breathtaking update to the idea of digital songwriting.

Miwa Momo Hojo, born in 1982 studied Imagine Arts & Sciences at Musashino Art University, Japan. Her solo-works are mainly influenced by traditional japanese music and its instruments. Yuichi Nagao studied media/soundart with Christophe Charles at Tokyo Arts University and musicology with the jazz musician Naruyoshi Kikuchi. His solo-works are defined by the search for new musical structures.”

Insub #012 [fist of kong - does stuff]

Posted in Improvisation, Jazz, Noise by twilight electric

“In 2003, alto and tenor saxophonist Charlie Naked, bassist Danny McMahon, and drummer Vaughan Boone joined forces to become Fist of Kong, a free jazz trio playing spontaneously improvised music, free of preconceptions and premeditation.

Though Boone left after about a year and a half with the group, Naked and McMahon continued Fist of Kong alternately as a more experimental duo, and in a free-improv workshop format with several other members of Houston’s vibrant free improv scene, including trombonist Mike Switzer, guitarist Jim Otterson, keyboardist Robert Pearson, violist Rose Lange, percussionist Tom Zermeno, cellist Melisa Rose, tenor saxophonist John Atlas, and many others.

The members of Fist of Kong do not discuss the music before it’s played, making each rehearsal, recording session, and performance a unique moment of collective self-expression.”
