BirdSong #024 [tiny creatures - homunculus]

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

“The Homunculus, Latin for little man, is a truly tiny creature that lives in the brain and controls it from the inside. Some claim he is responsible for all non-basic functions of man; perhaps the enjoyment of music, or perhaps its creation.

Tiny Creatures return less tiny this time around. They’ve beefed up their sound and lost the tendency to scatter. Still, they won’t have a moment’s rest. From beatbox layers recorded live into a delay pedal to stinging guitars to a harmonium competing with crappy, lo-fi keyboards and vocals that conjure images of the Red Army choir, Homunculus rides the fine line between eclectic and cohesive and falls square in the middle.”

JON7NET #029 [V.A. - disturbing music for disturbing times]

Friday, April 27th, 2007

“Different artists were asked to submit material of a dark/disturbing nature. The resulting tracks explore these themes through dark ambiance, noise, lo-fi electronics, and sound collage.

The compilation begins with the droning ‘14k scumbag’: a resonance of distorted synths and insect-crackle. Next, ‘Swed_Fl’ lures us into the darkness with its deep bass and cheerless ambiance. Belgium’s Roebin de Freitas delivers the circuit-bent noise of ‘Trailblazers Anthem,’ which is followed by the Merzbow-like assault of Rotted Brain’s ‘Misunderstood.’ The next two tracks, ‘Battle Ready’ and ‘Rumr’ feature lo-fi electronics and misfiring drum machine patterns.

Turmoil returns us to the darkness with ‘Auditory Hallucinations,’ a night-time walk through an unfamiliar landscape. ‘Waxing Elephant’ shifts and jostles like a carnival ride gone haywire, while ‘Armaments’ sounds like a cheap video game being eaten by a distortion pedal. Aptly named, ‘Transmissions from the Asylum’ creates a disturbing atmosphere where disembodied voices cry out in the silence. The haunting ambiance of Wavespan’s ‘The Bridge’ evokes a sense of being followed, as footsteps echo amidst a background of dark drones and chiming metal.

Mystified expands his netlabel discography with ‘Instability 2′: an unsettling arrangement of shifting electronic tones. The compilation finishes with the urban field recording of ‘Drugs and Our Youth,’ by label head Jon7.”

IO #018 [mark.nine - artificial horizon]

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

“The long awaited original full length album from Mark is here. Filled with dark, strange and beautiful melodies, this album is sure to make you think, as the mysteries lie further than just the album cover and the music itself. Unusual lo-fi style beats and downtempo style pieces help put together this release from Mark. “

CA #018 [dizzonanz domestic - the.ant.is-proven.perilous (special lo-fi edition)]

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

“Every track is rendered in Lo-Fi. The highest ones being 64 Kbps and the lowest being 40 Kbps. This is intentionally done to give the album a gritty and more abrasive texture. Dizzonanz Domestic is a very eclectic and experimental project.”

IO #017 [endorphin - reset]

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

“The first release of Russian duo electronica musicians. As they have characterized, ‘We have played electro-ethno drums, having diluted their electronic’. This release includes some heavy break-beat style ethnic drums that sound amazing and a down-tempo, lo-fi piano feeling at the same time. Unique in its own way.”

WaW #001 [wolfseule - unverdauliche skizzen]

Monday, February 5th, 2007

“Unverdauliche Skizzen (which means: ‘indigestible sketches’) is a rubberball, jumping up and down in a hexagon of nothingness, sometimes bouncing against the walls (Bong!), sometimes teetering in space (Sssshhhhh…), sometimes falling unstoppably into lit darkness (Phhhhhhhhh…).

We stand on the abyss to hell and dance to the music of the stars. (W. Moers) Thanks to my beloved brother Massju for doing, what he does, to Lisa for getting me started and to Mr. Alex P. Schaller for making the cover and repairing my record-player.

Massju says:

Here it is! The first vital-signs of Weirdandwired! Bow low before Wolfseules first netlabel-release ever, a Tour-de-folie through dark electronica, an experimental trip through grain-fields of sound.

‘Unverdauliche Skizzen’ is an opus on mysterious creatures, a lyrical voyage, only the weirdness is your companion. Leaving behind all stylistic constraints, Wolfseule creates her own playground of electronic story-telling, listen closely, it is worthwhile. Picturesque, metaphorical, profound and brainy, so are the adjectives appropriate for this piece of electronic weirdness, take care of the glare. We at weirdandwired strongly recommend to use your headphones so that you can enjoy this experience as intense as possible. Get wired, we provide for the weirdness!”
